Human resources professional

A day as a human resources professional

You work in the HR department at your local NHS hospital, and start at 9am. Your first task is to advertise for a new midwife, as a member of staff is about to retire. You work with the head of midwifery services to find more details about the position including the qualifications required and the hours of work and then place the advert on the NHS Jobs website. Next, you sort job applications for a catering assistant and phone successful candidates to arrange interviews. After receiving an email from a staff member whose wages haven't gone into his bank account, you change incorrect bank details and ensure his money is transferred. In the afternoon you meet with your HR colleagues to discuss staff training and development in your organisation. You finish at around 5pm, having helped play a key role in a life-saving organisation.

Does this sound like you?

You enjoy working with other people, and are easy to talk to. You're very organised, can do many tasks at once and stay calm under pressure.

What's next after GCSE?

Although there are no minimum entry requirements, you'll usually need a range of GCSE passing grades (or the equivalent) to demonstrate a good, basic education. You should then consider applying for a BTEC in human resource management, or A/AS levels (or the equivalent).

What's next after A level and beyond?

Ideally, you should work towards at least two A levels (or the equivalent), in order to take a degree at university - perhaps in human resource management. Check university prospectuses for entry requirements.
