Sterile services technician

A day as a sterile services technician

You work in the sterile services department at your local NHS hospital. Working in a team, you are responsible for providing sterilised equipment to hospital theatres and departments. You begin your day at 9am. Your first task is to carefully and methodically dismantle a sophisticated piece of medical equipment, and thoroughly clean and sterilise each piece. You must follow a set cleaning procedure to ensure you meet government standards for hygiene. After sterilisation, you check each piece of equipment under a microscope to ensure all germs have been removed before putting everything together again. You enjoy being a vital part of the healthcare system, and like the opportunities for training and career advancement that come with this role. You're currently working towards a qualification in decontamination, and hope one day to train as a manager.

Does this sound like you?

You're patient and hard working, pay attention to detail and enjoy following rules and set procedures. You like being part of a team and have good communication skills.

What's next after GCSE?

You'll usually need GCSE (or the equivalent) passes in maths, english and a science subject. You will receive training on the job.

What's next after A level and beyond?

A levels aren't essential for this role, as on the job training is offered. An entry-level role offers the chance to work towards a qualification awarded by the Institute of Decontamination Sciences.
