“It is equally enjoyable and fulfilling. Dentistry is a great career!”

What do you do?

The fantastic thing about a career in dentistry is that there are so many different career paths you can choose from. Since graduating I have worked for the first two years as a general dentist in a high street practice. This was really enjoyable, as I had my own group of patients to look after. However, I also want to gain some additional specialist skills so I then worked in a large NHS hospital as a dentist working alongside surgeons in the maxillofacial department, seeing patients with injuries to their mouth and face as well as looking after people with mouth cancer. This was very interesting work and helped me understand how dentists complement the work of doctors and surgeons in looking after patients. I am now working as a children's community dentist which offers me even more specialist skills that I can use in my future career.

What is your typical day?

My job is fantastic. No day is the same as the one before. My role is split between a community dental practice where I examine and treat child dental patients. The other half of my job is based in a general hospital, where I work to improve the oral health of the children who have to stay in hospital for medical reasons. One day I will be doing a check up on a child’s teeth and the next I am running a campaign in the hospital around the importance of good diet and oral hygiene. It’s an extremely busy role, however it is equally enjoyable and fulfilling. Dentistry is a great career!
